HABITAT INFORMATION
Ecologically, ant nests are scattered from mangrove forests and trees on the beach to a height of 2400 m. Ant nests are most prevalent in grasslands and are rarely found in lowland tropical forests, but are more common in forests and open farmlands with a height of about 600 m. He is found mostly attached to some trees, generally in eucalyptus trees, mountain pines, kaha, and beech trees, but rarely in trees with delicate and fragile rods such as Eucalyptus. Ant nest also grows on a treeless plain with low nutrients and above the tree altitude. In the wild habitat ant nests are inhabited by a variety of ant species and often by three species of the Iridomyrmex genus. Our identification of the anthill Myrmecodia pendens shows that this plant is inhabited by ant colonies of Ochetellus sp.
Ants have colonised almost every landmass on Earth. The only places lacking indigenous ants are Antarctica and a few remote or inhospitable islands. Ants thrive in most ecosystems and may form 15–25% of the terrestrial animal biomass.
Ants live in large groups called colonies. They may nest underground, inside trees, or in the walls and voids of a house or building. Inside a home, ants can nest behind baseboards, moldings, and counter tops, as well as inside walls. Each ant colony is made up of different types of ants called castes. A single colony can exist for many years with the same queen ant, but the worker ants have a shorter life expectancy.
Ants eat many different kinds of food, and their preferences change depending on the time of the year. In the spring, when ants are preparing to mate and lay eggs, ants prefer a high protein diet. They may eat meat scraps left in the trash, roadkill, other insects, or fats like grease, oil, and butter. Later in the summer, when a new generation of ants requires lots of food to grow, and worker ants are busy expanding the nest and maintaining the colony’s tunnels, ants will seek carbohydrates to eat for energy. At this time, ants will be attracted to sweets such as crumbs and leftovers, spilled drinks, and garden produce.
